Fresh and Right at My Fingertips

As you can imagine, sedentary office jobs are not very exciting in themselves. Especially those that involve telephones with multiple lines and “hold” buttons, filing cabinets, and cubicles. Tolerating a stuffy environment like that, not to mention actually getting some sort of work done, is not an easy feat. I think that you either have to really love what you’re doing or you just really need the money. (Being the desperate college student that I am, you can probably figure out for yourself which of the two is my real motive for subjecting myself to such repressive, menial conditions at my teeny tiny workplace.)

Which is why I can’t believe what I’m about to say.

It was actually pretty fun at work today. Lots of fun. Yesterday, in fact, was even better.

“How much more fun,” you ask, “can I have faxing out medical prescriptions and screaming out summaries of Wall Street Journal articles to my cranky 84-year-old boss who keeps losing his hearing aids?” (Why yes, that is what investment assistants do.)

One word, sista: GOSSIP. Actually, make that TEXTGOSSIP.

It’s really too easy to poke fun at the people I work with. Along with the other private investors, we rent out cubicles from a securities company with which we associate. Cubicles? Yeah… not exactly the epitome of privacy. And when you couple that with the fact that I can count my coworkers on one hand, I really can’t help but notice probably the funniest and stupidest things sometimes. (Did he really just say that?? … Why is his finger up his nose? … Come on now.) And of course, with such shameless acts come smirks, chuckles, and suggestive stares just waiting to be exchanged between my coworker and me. I know, we’re classy like that.

It’s not easy to actually make sly comments though. We sit across from each other, but we can’t just look each other in the eye and, well, gossip. Not even whisper-gossiping! Trying to keep a gossipy conversation going would be impossible with our subjects right within earshot.

So yesterday we finally started to textgossip. Gossiping via text message. Nothing mean or nasty of course, just some random observations and tasteful complaining.

It’s funny because she’s twice my age with three kids but still brimming with youthfulness. And when it comes to office humor, it feels like she’s in my head or something. Easy to talk to, and I love her witty sarcasm. I really don’t know who’s more gossipy: middle-aged women like her or college kids like me. 😉

Yesterday I texted her complaining that cubicle dividers don’t help, that my desk area still smells like my ancient boss and his favorite breadstick snack. She texted back (and I quote): “Lol…just hope he don’t talk while eating breadsticks..when he does that, its like sawdust flying all over.”

And we’d look up at each other and try to stifle our giggling.

More textgossiping continued today. Call us immature and unprofessional, but gossip is seriously a great form of entertainment! Especially when it’s fresh and right at my fingertips, literally. I already have my beloved Google Reader (with your awesome blogs in queue) minimized on the computer screen as I’m working. I’ll happily take whatever else I can use to get through the work day!

Anyway, speaking of breadsticks… and uh… carbs…

I’ve been having cooked oats for the past five days! Feels like I might start forgetting what overnight oats taste like.

Sunday’s breakfast: cooked oats mixed with ground flax seeds and cinnamon, topped with strawberry soygurt, almond butter, chopped papaya, unsweetened coconut, and cacao nibs.

Monday’s breakfast: Same as above, but replaced soygurt (ran out!) with plain Greek yogurt. Not as sweet but still delicious in its creamy way.

Today’s breakfast: oatmeal raisin cookie style, with blueberries: cooked oats, cinnamon, almond butter, raisins, fresh blueberries.

Lunch on Sunday was another wrap like Saturday’s, without spinach and with tofu added. Whole wheat wrap with hummus, butternut squash, black beans with a drizzle of BBQ sauce, tofu, and homemade pico de gallo.

I also sprinkled on some sea seasoning (triple blend flakes) for its mild salty flavor. Remember when I got these?

Dinner on Sunday involved more roasted veggie goodness, as I predicted Saturday night. The green beans, eggplant, and tomato are all from the garden. It’s pretty much a struggle for me not to get them a-roastin’ when they’re fresh and right at my fingertips.

With brown rice and sweet corn. LOVE sweet corn on the cob! I don’t slather it with anything. I just like mine steamed, unseasoned. I wrap a wet paper towel around the corn while it’s still in its husk, pop it into the microwave for 4 minutes, let it cool, remove the husks and silks, and voila–steamed corn-on-the-cob. So easy!

At work there is a very good chance you’d find me nibbling on dates.

…and at the apartment, some fresh fruit, Larabars, and PB and Cinnamon Puffins. I haven’t bought cereal in years, but I decided to try these since they were on sale 2 for $5. I know I know, with my Annie’s Goddess dressing purchase last week and now this, it seems like I’m just jumping (polevaulting is more like it!) onto the bloggie bandwagon of overpriced goodies. But sometimes curiosity just wins me over and I just have to try things for myself.

These are pretty good–sweet enough but not too sweet like most cereals. A handful or two makes for a great snacklet.

Below is a hodgepodge of work lunches and dinners at the sista’s (I should stop spelling like that) apartment from the past two days. They’re just gigantic salads with some of the usual yummy suspects (namely spinach, kale, carrots, celery, mushrooms, tofu) and new fixin’s…

Lunch at work yesterday, featuring leftover black beans, roasted veggies, and a little BBQ sauce. Roasted onions are so sweet… yum.

Dinner last night: with steamed butternut squash and hummus, and corn on the side.

Lunch today: same as the night before, with tofu and with Annie’s Goddess dressing instead of hummus.

Dinner tonight: featuring a few shakes of Tabasco and invisible corn on the side

I brought lots of hummus over from home, so I’ve been trying to use it up. It’s clearly been a struggle, as you can tell. 😉

I cannot wait to get home again tomorrow. Cooking at home means less repeat meals, and, you know, more time to be creative with things.

Time for some more movie watching. I think this calls for some Puffins and frozen cantaloupe!

Questions: Are you the gossiping type? I think we all have it inside of us, but some are more “guilty” of it than others. Also, do you eat sea veggies? If so, in what form? If not, would you consider it? I’ve never liked seafood even before I went vegetarian, because I simply could not stand the fishy smell nor the taste. The sea seasoning I bought is a lot milder in smell and isn’t bad-tasting at all. Plus, rumor has it that sea veggies are good for you. 😉
